Annual summer musical changing business model
By Andy Porter
The Walla Walla Community College Foundation’s summer musical this year will be a departure from years past.
“Doug Bayne said the foundation, which he directs, will partner with Shakespeare of Walla Walla to provide a “musical theater experience” this summer.
“It will be a different model than the traditional one,” Bayne said.
He said foundation members felt a change away from the business-as-usual model was needed to keep the summer event alive and thriving. The event was called off in 2012 due to budget cuts but resumed with a production in 2013.
“We wanted to make sure the community had the opportunity for a musical theater experience,” he said. “This change in the model represents a chance to enhance the experience for the community participants and the students.”
The foundation’s outdoor summer musical at the city-owned Fort Walla Walla Amphitheater has been summer tradition for more than 30 years. The foundation’s past musical productions have included “Footloose” in 2010, “Hairspray” in 2011, “The Music Man” in 2013 and “Fiddler on the Roof” last year.
Bayne said today that no date has been set to to announce this year’s event.
